These possibly invisible augmentations provide many benefits over the usually advetised increase in breast size.
There are 10 implant slots in total, first 5 are occupied by so called "attribute implants" which surprise surprise, increase your attributes. And attributes affect the rate at which you learn skills, so higher relevant attributes to your skill = higher learning rate = faster ships, faster progress, faster all the things!
For a newbie a good aim is to have Cybernetics skill in NEURAL ENHANCEMENT (is that the name still? did not check) category trained to lvl 2 at least and plug in "+3s" for attributes, you can usually skip the charisma attribute, cause nobody cares about you anyway and the attribute won't help. Of course those are not the cheapst thing in the world blah blah blah.. but as long as you keep your wits about you in high and low security space they should stay with you for life, not for the next life though, so be Fing careful where your pod goes and try to keep it together.
Also implants don't drop off pods, so people usually don't pod for fiscal means, if that is to any consolation to you.
But back on the track, you see, the attributes are not the only things these things plugged into your anus can help with.
On top of the attributes, there are specific sets of implants which can provide benefit to various other stats such as speed, repair amount, shield boost amount, your mom amount, power grid, cpu... and do not forget a racially specific sensor strength! (not particularily OP those ones) so those are the first 5 slots out of 10 covered.
The number 6 slot is for satan, but really, you see this slot is a slot from hell, cause it is a real gamechanger, or at least can be, because most of the faction sets have a this "OMeGa" implant which basically kicks all the non-attribute bonuses up a noch, and by that I mean by 100% or more.. or less.. since to keep it simple, each of these faction sets comes in qualities of 3 qualified as "grades" which are.. low, mid, and high, yey!
So to revise, a guy with implants up his ass can potentially increase his selected kind of repair rate by more than 50 percent, which is ridiculous kinda... best part is while they can cost up to couple billions, they are in the pod, so as long as you warp out after your ship explodes, your pod is all good. (no it's not all good, dock it up to make it better).
And don't even get me started on the rest... ok, the rest:
"Hardwirings" are nonattribute enhancing implants, which have strange and confusing numbers next to them unless they are very special. Usuallu they come in up to 6 degress of quality ranging in the amount of bonus they provide. Take for instance "big daddy's large hybrid turret xx1 to xx6" these increase your Large Hybrid Turret damage by 1 to 6 percent and that's something am i rite? There are even industrial hardwirings go grab them!
So if your brain is stuck in the box of a flat rate SP increase and you do not feel like investing into injectors for lets say the 10 day train for capacitor management 5, maybe instead plug in +3% for cap amount and +3% for cap recharge so that you can be a cap stable scrub (cap stability is for pussies, but pussies do live longer lives).
To conclude this shit of a lesson on implants, which by no means is unfairly overshadowed by this matter being covered in a much more understandable fashion by the enthusiasts of EVE university... we have learned that implants are important. you plug them in through your anus, they stay with your clone and die with them too. And they can improve your quality of life by enabling impossible ship fittings or combat feats beyond the shiny mods. So get them, plug them, enjoy them, try not to lose them, but if you do, buy new, don't be a pussy over them. Also take drugs if you can. They are awesome.
